Fred62

Florida Lemon Cake at Fred 62 is served up in a mini budt fashion. Dare I mention frosting? Notttt here, no frosting for this baby. Fred62 cosmopolitinizes cake. Maybe Frederick of Fred62 thought lemon frosting might hide the pretty curvacious shape of the beloved Florida Lemon Cake Star. Fred62 does a fantastic job in the visual department. Florida Lemon Cake at Fred62 shows us texture defined ala fredstyle. This super moist yellow lemon cake hints at a mild lemon essence extract. Plus it's is a cutie in size and beauty. We love your patisserie department Fred62. Most every bountiful bite is loaded with the density close to flourless chocolate cake. Imagine that ~? Fred62 does a fabulous job at providing our foodybooties with nurturing sweetness most any foodie would't pass, plus a pretty mini bundt baby-cake almost too pretty to eat.

Alcove Cafe & Bakery

So we thought we'd try again. Alcove Cafe & Bakery is so cute with all the outside dining and the adorable cheese and specialites store. The Lemon Rasberry cake was our next mission. Bountiful with a whip cream frosted yellow cake and live rasberries atop, along with white chocolate shavings. We found yellow sponge cake layered with a custard like lemon curd that hinted of lemon essence. But people of the dessert control center where did the rasberry filling come from? The menu describes the filling as fresh rasberry jam. In fact it was flat, and artificial in taste. It was red and tasted like sugar. Maybe it was artificial. The cake part was spongy and a bit rubbery intexture. Gosh i really wanted it to work this time. I am so enchanted by the beauty and environment at the alcove. The desserts are missing the mark. Alcove Bakery and Cafe gets an A for pretty food, yet misses the mark on taste.

Alcove Cafe & Bakery

Alcove Cafe & Bakery has a lemon blueberry cake thats sugary and and spongy with an occasional hint of lemon and ping of blueberry. The cake part is sponge and part poundcake with a bit of a lift. Yes its moist, and tries to be fluffy. The frosting is a bland white sugar with no depth and only a pasty dense and granulated texture. It's such a let down because the design of the cake is so bold beautful with an organic cascading frost falling off the sides. Then you bite into this decadent treatment of what we recognize as cake, expecting the sweet fireworks to trigger pleasure. Low and behold, a shocking let down of ... it looks like cake, acts like cake, smells like cake... then caboom. You are sweeping your foodybootie up for a rebound cuz it can't be true. How could something so pretty from a trendy little place like Alcove Cafe & Bakery be so wrong in flavor. It can't be a show.. really. So, we kept tasting and it only got worse. Alcove we love you and your pretty desserts. Get the patisserie chef to line up the beauty with some taste to rave about citywide~

Sweet Lady Jane

Our foodbooties launched a lemon cake hunt into the city of angels with the first tasting from Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose. Veering from the standard chocolate plethora of choices available a lemon-esque tugging placed our compass into a fresh fun and invigiorating citrus direction. We wanted light and easy on the tummy, even somehow lower in fat and carbs--maybe. Sweet Lady Jane was open. It was 8:30pm and a parking spot was empty right in front. We got the goods and brought the single venerable slice back to the studio habitat. Foodiebooty tasting caps on and the tasting ecstasy unexpected--indeed. The Sweet Lady Jane fairies dazzled our taste and senses with an elevating lemon curd education. We learned how Sweet Lady Jane defines fluffy, light, moist, and generous proportions in a true lemon cake to the clouds. We floated into the tangy, splash of lemon curd so sweet sour that our pallette relished in the the cushion of a mild whipped buttercream frosting. Oh~ so light and delightful in the sheer pleasure of swimming and combining texture, taste, and tang, of yellow cake, lemon curd, and whipped frosting. How could we extend our new found facinating Lemon Curt Cake jackpot? The hmmms, ahhhs, and ooohhhhggg's summarizes the final score. We one had one precious slice that made the purest most pristine impression of a true lemon curd cake. Sweet Lady Jane we thank you graciously for Lemon Curd Cake and our introduction to your recipe. May the foodies of the world be officially hearkened to "hail, hail" our Sweet Lady Jane for her notable contribution to the dessert and cake scene of Los Angeles.
