El Hurache Azteca 1 Mexican Food

Highland Park has a gem of flavor located in the small neighborhood kitchen on York Blvd near Occidental College. Here you will find flavorful mexican food made with love and absolute fresh care. Attention to flavor and spice is the strength of most any dish at El Hurache.

The Hurache itself is an elongated thick corn torilla filled with mashed pinto puree which is cooked into a pocket within the corn dough on the flat griddle surface until a crunchy outer surface forms while maintaining the soft warm inner body of the hurache.
We ordered ours with "asada" which is a yummy grilled steak and marinated in spices that tenderize it with savory flavor. It comes with a crumbly contija cheese sprinkled over top for accent flavor and a creamy sour cream like sauce that ties the spike of cilantro and biting white onions. Between bites the fresh red radish is a refreshing contrast taste for elevated enjoyment of the savory, creamy crunchy tastes.

We tried the green mole special. Wow what a refreshing take on mole. A deep rustic melody of complex flavors embellish the simple boiled chicken into shangrala. Roll this combo of green chicken mole into a fresh warm flower tortilla accompanied with fresh boiled beans and red mexican rice... and a touch of onion cilantro mix.. and whalaa.. another tasting plethora danced up and down the tasting palattes with heated pleasure.

The chicken tacos were only $1 each and oh my god... juicy--flavorful-- fresh-- real... and tasty.. with an accent of cilantro and the consistent onion... a feast! You can add on any green; red; salsa of any version available at the mini salsa bar just below the worlds most unique fresh fruit drink display. Jamaica; melon; watermelon; tamarind; honeydew, melon, and lemonade.

This place is in the urban underground hood for those who care about good food in a casual cityscape setting. You can either dine outside on the sidewalk aluminum chair and tables under the shade onnings or inside. The inside decor is unpretentious; breakroom-ish storage space looking -- dining room is your other option for seating. Its air conditioned and kind of intimately layed out and clean.

The feng shui is a bit whacked but.. this makes it all the more interesting to lean up against an industrial fridge that has neon sings posted all over it like a bulletin board in a newsroom with all the stuff available to eat from the busy kitchen on that day.

If you glance past the order taker you'll see like seven ladies working busily over the stoves. You can catch a glimpse of the small space yielding out the best tasting comfort food your taste buds will contact. Oh, and don't worry yourself with the slamming front door, its reminescent of living in an old house where the screen door spring is just not working. No bills over $20! So kick off your Huraches and try out some good home cooked Mexican Food at El Hurache Azteca. It helps to read spanish. This isn't the kind of place that will give you everything on the side or vegan style.
